The newborn

What is the treatment and care of the newborn after birth and in hospital? Can you deal with possible complications and neonatal diseases?

As far as the conditions of health allow it, the newborn will be put face down. Then the baby will be attended by the neonatal nurse, and the neonatal doctor will perform the first screening. And the baby will be brought to you for the first breast feeding (still in the delivery room). This procedure may be also modified. If the baby’s health conditions are good, the nurse attendance and first screening may be postponed for a later time.

Among other medical devices, the neonatal ward is equipped with three modern  incubators, vital signs monitors, infusion pumps and „phototherapy“, and thus we  can treat post natal adaptation disorders, increased blood bilirubin  (hyperbilirubinemia), and infections. The neonatal ward provides continuous neonatologist services. A transfer to the Kramare Pediatric University Hospital, in cases of serious complications, such as neonatal surgery, occurs very seldom.
In very urgent cases, when there would not be sufficient time for transferring the mother to a prenatal center at the time preceding 34th week of pregnancy, labor of extremely premature newborn will take place in this hospital with the assistance of artificial lung ventilation before the ambulance arrives so that the baby could get qualified care in its first hours of life provided by a neonatologist and an anesthesiologist.
Struggling to respect the "Gynecology and Obstetrics Conception" prepared by the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, the women admitted to this hospital who go into preterm labor before they are 34 weeks pregnant, are transported to a perinatal center, as prescribed by the Slovak legislation.

Under physiological conditions of the newborn baby, a 24 hour rooming-in system is favored. There are two doctors’ rounds a day, during which the pediatric doctor monitors your baby’s health conditions. Among other tests, bilirubin is measured by a special device pressed against the skin. When the bilirubin level is high, a blood sample is taken for laboratory tests. Depending on the degree of jaundice, the baby remains in the mother’s room in a “bilibed” (a unit generating blue light), or in case of higher bilirubin level, the baby will go under the incubator blue light.

On the third day, biochemical screening for congenital metabolic diseases is made by taking a few drops of blood from the baby’s heel. In addition, also brain and kidney ultrasound imaging, eye and hearing tests are made. The neonatal nurse will give you some advice on how to take care of the baby with diaper changing and bathing, and assist you at breastfeeding. Whenever you feel you need some help, you may ask for assistance. When medically not indicated, the baby does not receive any additional food or drink.
